Gulu City Schools Urged to Improve Sanitation to Fight UTIs

The Gulu City Education Department has urged schools to put in place good sanitary systems to prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) among learners.

This follows reports that many learners especially girls in boarding schools battle with UTIs due to poorly maintained toilets and urinals.

Richard Irwenyo, the Gulu City Education Officer says that it’s important for schools to regularly disinfect the sanitary facilities at least three times a day (in the morning, after break time and after lunch) using strong disinfectants to prevent cases of UTIs.

Irwenyo advises that schools that can’t afford to hire cleaners to do the job, should assign their gate keepers to do the job at an additional cost.

He explains that the high cases of UTI’s in schools is the reason the department recently issued a circular cautioning schools against operating illegal boarding facilities.
