Experts: Rise in Gulu’s Perennial Crop Farming a Major Win for Honey Production

An increase in the growing of perennial crops in Gulu district is likely to increase honey production, according to apiculture experts.

Honey production in the district has currently dropped to less than 40,000 kilograms from 72,000 kilograms harvested in 2023/2024 season.

This has been attributed to factors such as massive cutting down of trees, reduced bee forage and climate change.

But Alphonse Acaye, the Gulu District Entomology officer says that an increase in the number of farmers growing perennial crops especially coffee and bananas will boost honey production.

Acaye explains that honey production is reduced when bees struggle to look for forage especially during the dry season when farmers have harvested their season crops.

He adds that honey production will increase as many people are paying attention and adapting to climate change.
