Ex-Imam Pleads Not Guilty to Domestic Violence Charges

Rackara Abubakari, a former Imam from Awach Sub County in Gulu district who was arrested for domestic violence last week pleaded not guilty in the chief magistrate’s court.

Rackara appeared before Mirriam Amoru, a grade 1 magistrate who remanded him until the 22nd of next month.

Meanwhile Justine Alule, the Gulu chief magistrate has called on women in the Acholi sub-region to stop viewing wife battering as a sign of love but rather as a criminal act.

He says violence against women is criminal and perpetrators have to face the law.

Ruth Lawino, a Lawyer at International Justice Mission Gulu Head Office says their recent research indicates that six in 10 women have faced either sexual or physical violence at the hands of their partners.

Previous report by International Justice Mission who took over the case indicate that 39-year old Rackara Abubakari, assaulted his estranged partner from Awach Sub-county in Gulu district after cohabiting from 2013 until July last year.

Their relationship was marked by repeated incidents of domestic violence.
