Authorities at Gulu Regional Referral have suspended their mortuary services to pave way for renovation works.
The hospital recently said it would expand the capacity of the mortuary to accommodate 12 bodies from the current capacity of six.
Walter Uriekwun, the Hospital Principal Administrator says the renovation works are expected to last two months.
Uriekwun told Favour FM that during this time, bodies of patients who die at the hospital will be immediately released to family members while unclaimed bodies will not be admitted.
Meanwhile Peter Banya, the Gulu Resident City Commissioner in charge Laroo- Pece Division says they have reached an understanding with the Cancer Institute to take in some unclaimed bodies when there is need.
Section 26 of the Public Health Act states that the relevant Local authority is legally tasked with the removal and burial of unclaimed bodies and deceased destitute persons in a space of two weeks.
