Gulu City’s back streets are set to be transformed into corridors of commercial activity following a fruitful meeting between Gulu City Council authorities and landlords.
According to the plan, the backstreets will be turned into rental units, landscaped walkways and green spaces.
During the meeting held on Wednesday at Acholi Inn, Patrick Komakech, Gulu City’s Senior Architect presented the city’s vision which involves redeveloping underutilized back streets from the current dump sites they have been turned into.
Julius Acire Labeja, the Gulu City Mayor says the plan once implemented will increase income for property owners through improved sanitation, enhanced value of properties and attracting more investment.
Landlords have welcomed the proposal and requested for continuous technical guidance and physical support from the City’s Engineering Department to ensure that the developments conform to the city’s physical planning standards.
Innocent Ahimbisibwe, the Gulu City Town Clerk says the City will engage government agencies and utility companies such as National Water, Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited and telecommunications service providers, to facilitate the relocation of utility infrastructure where necessary.
Ahimbisibwe says they will prioritize improvements to the drainage system within the backstreets to support the planned developments.
