Police in Gulu City are hunting for three robbery suspects who escaped from custody in Bardege-Layibi Division.
The suspects were among four people arrested for allegedly robbing and assaulting a UPDF soldier at about 8:30pm on Saturday in Alokolum village, shortly after the officer had attended his father’s burial.
Three suspects later escaped from custody under unclear circumstances prompting investigations into the alleged escape.
According to Amir Kamba, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner for Bardege-Layibi Division, the fourth suspect who was injured during the confrontation with the soldier is admitted at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital under police guard and remains handcuffed.
The escape comes amid concerns over rising crime in Bardege-Layibi Division, including gang robberies, animal theft and night-time shop break-ins.
Kamba says security agencies have intensified patrols after identifying crime hotspots within the City and are investigating how the suspects managed to flee.
He is urging the public, especially youth on holiday, to avoid criminal activities, warning that offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.
