Reports from the Gulu Regional Referral Hospital Gynecology department, has shown that abortion cases increase during back-to-school time.
According to Grace Lanyero, the in-charge Gynecology department at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, normally students conceive during holidays and when time for going back to school approaches, they try all means to get the babies out to allow them go back to school.
Lanyero says that on a weekly basis, they receive 20 patients but the number shoots up to 42 patients per week or even more when the students are going back to school.
Lanyero adds that the age group that mostly come in for post abortion care services are from 16 to 30 years who come in critical condition with a lot of bleeding, most come when the process of the abortion has already been started and it has failed.
Others come to request for it to be done but normally they are encouraged to go back home and keep the baby.
Lanyero emphasizes that abortion can cause rapture of the uterus, constant bleeding leading to death, uterus perforation, blockage of tubes leading to infertility among others so people should desist from practicing it.
Lanyero condemns abortion and advises the health facilities who do referrals to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital to make it earlier such that they are helped promptly.
