
Motorcycle Operators from Bardege-Layibi under their umbrella organisation Gulu City West Boda-Boda Association have announced plans to register and operate members Sacco aimed at improving welfare of its members.
Emma Ocen the incumbent chair who also retained his office as the chairman for Gulu City West Boda-boda Association says, Gulu City West boda boda associations plans to acquire a Sacco registration certificate by June 2026.
He further explains that this is aimed at easily seeking support from the government to the association due to high interest rates being charged on their members by loan institutions operating in the region.
Ocen notes that currently most government programs target organised groups not individuals something that they can benefit from as members once the formal process is done with the help of micro-finance support Centre.
Richard Oryem a motorist, staging at Olayo-ilong market a registered member with the association, asks for changes to be effected by the new leadership.
In July 2019, Boda-boda members in Gulu City lost millions of shillings in savings to their former leaders due to mismanagement where Thomas Okot Oboma the then chairman Gulu District Boda Boda Motorcycle Association was accused of swindling 33.6 million shillings, worth of members’ savings.
On the 16th of May 2026 about 8,000 registered members of Gulu City West Boda-Boda Association turned up for polls at Boma grounds voting Emmy Ocen as chairman with 645 votes, Samuel Kilara emerged speaker with 320 votes, Patrick Odong Tabu treasurer garnered 639 votes.
Meanwhile presiding officer Peter Charles Lwak also declared Bosco Okello Abach, Issa Okech, and Patrick Okello Otuka as General Secretary, head of revenue and publicity respectively
