Former Imam has been arrested over domestic violence in Gulu district after the case was reported and taken over by International Justice Mission (IJM).
Reports indicate that 39-year-old former Imam, Rackara Abubakari, assaulted his estranged partner in Awach Sub-county in Gulu district.
According to IJM reports, the couple cohabited from 2013 until July 2025, during which the relationship was marked by repeated incidents of domestic violence.
Some of these incidents were mediated at the community level, while others were reported to police but did not result in lasting protection or behavior change.
IJM report further notes that the survivor, whose identity is being withheld for safety reasons, separated from the perpetrator in July 2025 due to continued physical assault, however, he reportedly continued to pursue, and harass even after the separation, including at her new place of residence.
IJM report notes that the most recent physical assault occurred on May 30, 2026, at the woman’s home in Awach Sub-county where the suspect went to the residence and confronted her, which escalated into an ugly fight with the suspect reportedly kicking the woman in the chest and abdomen, hence she sustained injuries.
IJM report notes that the couple have three children aged 7, 10, and 13 and the suspect is currently at Gulu Central Police station.
David Ongom Mudong, the police Public Relations Officer for Aswa West confirms the incident.
