The education department in Gulu district has warned private schools against shunning co-curricular activities saying they are compulsory.
This comes after majority of private primary schools failed to turn up at a choir teachers’ training held recently at the district council hall in preparation for the National Music, Dance and Drama festival set for August in Iganga.
While choir teachers from all 47-government aided primary schools turned up for the two-day training, only 8 out of over 80 private primary schools turned up.
Jackline Akello, the Gulu District Inspector of Schools told Favor Fm in an interview that private schools are expected to participate in all activities planned for by the Ministry of Education and sports including MDD.
Akello says that schools kill children’s talents when they fail to participate in co-curricular activities.
Co-curricular activities are structured programs that complement classroom learning, designed to reinforce academic subjects while developing essential life skills like teamwork, leadership, and confidence.
