Acire Julius Labeja, the Mayor for Gulu City has criticized the ladies who entered Ker kwaro Acholi (the Acholi cultural institution) while wearing trousers yesterday during the welcome of General Charles Otema Awany after 47 years of service in the army.
Labeja says it is a big shame for the ladies to enter the kingdom with trousers and more so entering the house where the General and the chiefs were gathered was a big abomination and lack of respect on the ladies’ side.
Labeja has instructed those at the entrance to stop such ladies citing an example of the Buganda kingdom where no lady can ever enter the kingdom with a trouser.
Labeja says when it comes to respecting their culture, the Baganda do it better than the Acholi people because they cannot just wear any cloth which is ashaming.
He says Ker-kwaro Acholi should be accorded the respect it deserves by ways of dress code and behavior among others otherwise the Acholi will remain behind forever.
56-year-old Rose Oyat who was present at the event laments that western culture has dominated the descent Acholi culture.
Rose also says that all ladies who went to Ker-kwaro Acholi should have worn a long cloth or a gomesi instead of trousers.
