Gulu high court vows to clear case backlog by 2027.

With a number of pending cases standing at 1857 and a backlog of 946, Justice Philip Odoki Okello the Gulu high court resident judge is committing himself to clear the challenge to zero by 2027.

Speaking during Gulu Court Open day on Friday April 17, 2026, under the theme “Justice Begins With You”, Justice Philip says land dispute tops the list of criminal cases with 790 cases registered.

According to Odoki, there has been significant decline in backlog at Gulu High Court with cases dropping from 3,850 to 1,857 indicating a significant decline of 51.8% compared to the past three years.

He attributes this success to adoption of other effective initiatives such as plea bargain, small claim procedures and the recent alternative dispute resource as key to the progress.
