Water supply to Gulu City has once again been disrupted after a trailer truck crashed into the multi-billion Karuma-Gulu water pipeline, forcing the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to shut down operations at the Karuma plant.
The latest incident occurred yesterday morning at around 3:00 a.m. between Amwa and Aleny swamps in Myene Sub-county in Oyam District, marking the second such disruption in three months and the fifth since the pipeline was installed.
According to Ivan Tekakwo, the NWSC spokesperson for Northern Uganda, their technical team rushed to the scene.
According to Tekakwo, two pipes were extensively damaged. He says that they were yet to mobilise materials needed for repair works.
The shutdown has halted water supply along the 74-kilometre pipeline that feeds Gulu City and surrounding areas, affecting thousands of residents and businesses.
Tekakwo didn’t specify how long the repairs will take but urges customers to use the available water sparingly. Works are scheduled to commence today. Earlier last year, NWSC officials proposed the installation of guard rails along the water pipe line to safe guard the infrastructure from repeated damages which are costly.
In January this year, the corporation said it spent 15 million shillings to repair a section of the water pipeline which was damaged after a vehicle crashed into it along Amwa swamp also in Oyam district.
