Lira Police Detain LCI Chairperson, Two Others Over Alleged Theft of 50 Bales of Mosquito Nets

Police at Lira City West Division is holding in custody the LCI Chairperson of Junior Quarters and two others over alleged theft of 50 bale of mosquito nets.

49 year old James Okori, a carpenter and LCI Chairperson of Junior Quarters A Cell, 38 year old Jane Awor and 29 year old Tino Annette all residents of Junior Quarters were arrested on January 31, 2026.

It is alleged that the trio unlawfully took a bale containing fifty (50) mosquito nets, property of the Government of Uganda and kept it under unclear reasons.

The mosquito nets supplied by the Ministry of Health had been temporarily stored at Lira Police Primary School awaiting distribution to residents of Junior Quarters Cell under a Ministry of Health community program.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson says upon receiving the complaint, police conducted searches at the residences of the suspects where the stolen mosquito nets were recovered.

According to Okema, Police Preliminary findings indicate that the recovered mosquito nets are property of the Government of Uganda meant for free distribution to the community.

He says inquiries into the matter are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the theft and identify any other persons involved, appealing to the local leaders  to respect and stop undermining government program.
