Nwoya Farmers Receive Shs888.5 Million Tractor Boost

Northern Uganda Tractor Owners, Operators and Farmers Association (NUTOFA) SACCO is on a steady path to boosting mechanized farming in Nwoya district after acquiring three tractors worth 888.5 million shillings.

The tractors were acquired under the Local Economic Development (LED) project being implemented by the Microfinance Support Centre Ltd (MSC).

They were handed over on Thursday from Anaka Town Council in Nwoya district.

Robert Okok Acac, the chairperson NUTOFA SACCO says they are expected to pay back the loan in three years at a 40% subsidy from government.

Okok says the tractors will be hired out at 80,000 shillings to farmers who are members of the SACCO while nonmembers will acquire the services at the market rate which ranges between 100,000 to 120,000 shillings.

He says three multipurpose tractors can plough a total of 100 acres in a day and can also be used for planting, spraying, applying fertilizer, threshing and transportation of farm produce.

Tamim Ebong, the Nwoya district production officer urges farmers to make use of the tractors such that they are not late for planting.

Ebong notes that it takes about 20 days to dig an acre of land which makes farmers miss out on the season.
