Older persons reportedly dying of hunger in Gulu district

Older persons in Gulu district are reportedly dying of hunger due to rejection from their families.

Mary Apoto Oywa, the Councilor representing older persons in Gulu District says several older persons have been left to stay alone in their homes without people to take good care of them yet some cannot coo while others even lack the food to cook.

This she says has led to older persons dying of hunger daily.

Apoto advises people to take good care of their parents because the parents did the same for them while they were still young.

Apoto warns that everyone should ensure their older persons are not left in isolation in the villages but rather ensure that even if the whole family are away, there should be persons assigned to take good care of the older persons.

Ayot Harriet Liba, the Vice Chairperson NRM in Gulu District urges the community to all develop a heart for the older persons by ensuring that they are healthy, they have eaten, they have water, and have bathed among others.

A Daily Monitor report of 1st October 2024 indicates that older persons in Uganda go through severe challenges including extreme poverty, chronic health issues without adequate care and 86% face neglect.
