Lamwo District Approves New Plan to Combat Gender-Based Violence in Refugee Communities

Lamwo District has approved a new action plan to fight gender-based violence, especially in refugee‑hosting communities.

The plan, backed by the UN Development Programme’s Spotlight Initiative, aligns with global resolutions promoting women’s safety and peacebuilding.

Wilfred Nyeko, the Lamwo district Community Development Officer says reported GBV cases have now surpassed eight hundred, affecting women’s health, education, and livelihoods.

Ochola James, the Lamwo District Speaker welcomes the move warning that the plan must not stay on paper.

He however calls on leaders, cultural institutions, and communities to act.

Odur Justice Peace, the Lamwo District Secretary for Production notes that violence undermines family stability and productivity.

He says the plan will guide coordinated efforts among government, security agencies, and partners.

Aciro Anna, the Female Councilor for Paloga Sub County says rural women suffer in silence from domestic violence and early marriage.

She further appeals for more awareness and law enforcement.

Lamwo hosts thousands of refugees, and officials say high GBV rates have led to poor school attendance and reproductive health challenges.
