The outgoing Omoro District LC V Chairperson, Douglas Peter Okello, has conceded defeat in the recently concluded elections, saying the people of Omoro have spoken and decided who should lead the district.
Okello, who has served as Omoro District chairperson since the district was carved out of Gulu District nine years ago, lost to political newcomer Andrew Okot, popularly known as Obibi.
Okello contested on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket and garnered 10,020 votes, while Okot won the race as an independent candidate with 20,507 votes.
Speaking to Favour fm yesterday, Okello said the office of the district chairperson belongs to the people and that elected leaders merely hold it in trust.
He adds that the electorate had chosen to transfer that trust to another leader and says he would respect their decision.
However, Okello raised concerns about what he described as irregularities during the voting exercise.
He alleges that non-registered voters and underage individuals participated in the election and that discrepancies existed between the results declared and the actual votes cast at some polling stations.
He cites Orafoyo, Odek, Acet, and Lalogi sub-counties, where he claimed the number of votes cast exceeded those recorded during the presidential and parliamentary elections.
Last week, police arrested at least three people in Acet Town Council in connection with alleged election malpractices.
In Nwoya District, Patrick Okello Oryema reclaimed the district chairperson seat after winning on the NRM ticket with 16,934 votes, defeating DP candidate Nyeko, who polled 5,209 votes.
Oryema previously served as Nwoya District chairperson from its establishment in 2010 until he lost the seat in the 2021 general elections.
