Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital have cautioned the public against using traditional methods for treating ENT infections especially tonsillitis.
Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils, typically caused by a viral or bacterial infection.
It is highly common in children and usually resolves within three to five days.
Symptoms include severe a sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, and swollen glands, though young children may just drool, refuse food, or act unusually fussy.
There are reports that some members of the public use sharp objects such as a fork and other metals to scrap growths in the throat such as swollen tonsils.
Dr. Caroline Adong Cephas, an ENT consultant at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital says children who are usually victims of such crude treatment end up over bleeding and catching infections.
Adong explains that parents should seek treatment at the hospital instead of subjecting children to such a painful and dangerous process.
The hospital’s ENT department has since last week been carrying out a surgical camp targeting over 100 patients, mainly children.
