Parents demand for corporal punishment to address indiscipline

A section of parents in Pukony Sub County, Gulu district have demanded for the revival of corporal punishment in schools in order to address rising cases of indiscipline among pupils.

During a community dialogue held at Oguru primary school recently, it was discovered that several pupils are engaged in truancy, where pupils pretend to go to school but never arrive.

This behavior is reportedly contributing to poor performance of learners.

Parents who attended the meeting asked that teachers should cane such children in order to instill discipline.

But Jackline Akello, the Gulu district inspector of schools says it is the responsibility of the parents to discipline their children because government outlawed corporal punishment.

The Ministry of Education and Sports formally prohibited corporal punishment under the Children (Amendment) Act 2016, which provides up to three years in prison or a fine for offenders.

Akello says some children take advantage of their parents’ weakness to misbehave and accordingly urges parents to improve on their parenting methods.
