Thirteen students are among 15 people nursing injuries following an early morning road crash in Bugweri District that claimed the life of their bus driver.
The accident occurred at about 4:45 am at Nawangisa Village along the Mbale–Iganga Highway when an Isuzu bus, registration number UA551ED, rammed into the rear of a stationary Mercedes-Benz Actros trailer, registration number UBB269V.
The bus, owned by Amuria High School, was transporting 73 students from St. Paul Secondary School in Katakwi to Kasenyi Landing Site in Entebbe for a geography field study.
Busoga East Regional Police Spokesperson Michael Kasadha says preliminary investigations indicate the bus had been travelling from Mbale when the crash occurred.
The bus driver, identified as 68-year-old Kasakya Abdallah, died instantly.
Police says, traffic officers led by the Regional Traffic Officer visited and documented the scene.
Both the bus and the trailer have been impounded at Busembatya Police Station pending mechanical inspection as investigations into the crash continue.
Kasadha urges motorists to remain vigilant while using the roads.
