Security Forces Intercept Truck Carrying 150 Jerrycans of Suspected Illicit Waragi in Abim

Joint security forces intercepted a truck load with 150 jerrycans of suspected illicit crude waragi at the Angorom Joint Checkpoint in Abim District.

‎The Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) this morning intercepted  a blue Isuzu Canter, registration UAK 150G on its way from Lira via Agago towards Kotido.

‎Its occupants reportedly abandoned the truck and fled before their identities could be established.

‎Mt Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson Mike Longole confirms the seizure and says both the vehicle and the consignment were secured at the checkpoint.

He says, the operation is part of ongoing efforts to curb the trafficking and distribution of illicit alcohol, which poses serious health and security risks to communities in the region.

‎Longole commends the vigilance and swift action of the ASTU and UPDF teams on the ground.

‎He adds that investigations are underway to identify the suspects and trace the source and intended destination of the consignment.

‎Illicit waragi has been linked to deaths, insecurity, and other health complications in the Karamoja sub region in recent years.
