
Police in Busoga East is investigating circumstances under which 70-year-old Irene Nabirye, a resident of Nambaga cell, in Bwondha town council of Mayuge district drowned in Lake Victoria.
Nabirye was last seen alive in the afternoon hours, with some residents recalling how she exchanged pleasantries with them before heading to the shoreline.
It is reported that Nabirye was seen drawing water in a 10 liter jerry can along Nambaga shoreline today afternoon.
She reportedly missed some steps while walking away from the shoreline and fell in the water, drowning instantly.
Samson Namba, a local, says they attempted to rescue her in vain, since her body had already slipped through the deeper waters of the lake.
Namba, however, says that they mobilized local divers who jointly retrieved Nabirye’s lifeless body, which was handed over to police for further investigations.
Michael Kasadha, the Busoga East police spokesperson advises relatives to monitor the movements of their relatives as many need constant support throughout the execution of their daily duties.
