Tororo district education officials including head teachers have had a benchmarking tour of four selected primary schools in Gulu district.
The officials and head teachers who arrived in Gulu today visited Panykworo, Omoti Hill, Awach central and Awach primary schools.
They were impressed by the good practices they saw in the schools which include school feeding programs, teachers’ housing and community involvement in school activities among others.
At Awach central primary school, the head teacher Betty Akullu, explains that parents support the school in activities like weeding food crops which are used to feed learners.
Akullu says every child is able to have porridge at break time because the school grows maize.
She explains that parents contribute beans and maize which are prepared for the mid-day meal for learners.
Failure to provide lunch for learners has been blamed for low classroom attendance in the afternoons especially in government aided primary schools.
