UMOJA Microfinance Accused of Abducting Woman in Loan Dispute

Security in Kitgum is investigating allegations that a local microfinance institution;  UMOJA Microfinance Limited, abducted a woman; Rose Adiyo, over a loan default.

According to Joseph Okidi, the Kitgum Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Adiyo was abducted from her home in Paibwor North Village, Labongo Layamo Sub-county, on the 24th of last month.

She was reportedly brought to the UMOJA Microfinance office situated in Nyanza Cell Pager Division Kitgum Municipality, where she was held until the 27th of last month.

Okidi states that Adiyo had reportedly borrowed 700,000 shillings from UMOJA Microfinance and had a balance of 90,000 shillings when she was allegedly abducted by Ronald Ojok Olule, a loan officer.

Okidi says Adiyo and her family reported the incident to Resident District Commissioner’s Office, and a meeting between the two parties was scheduled on Monday at the RDC’s board room but UMOJA Microfinance boycotted it, prompting the investigation.

Okidi warns that if the allegations are true, the company and its employees will face serious consequences because abduction is a capital offense in Uganda.

However, Ursula Katala, the UMOJA Kitgum Branch Manager, denies the allegations, claiming that the office was not informed about the abduction but rather got news on media.
