Failed First Season Harvest Forces Gulu Farmers to Raze Crops

Some farmers in parts of Gulu district have been forced to raze down their withered crops of the first season to make way for the second planting season, according to reports.

A prolonged dry spell experienced between May and June left several farmers counting losses.

In Palaro Sub County, Michael Komakech, the L.C V councilor says he recently razed down four acres of maize which was affected by the dry spell.

Komakech says he is now preparing to plough the garden to plant maize afresh in the second season adding that he has not lost hope.

Meanwhile, Sarah Akot, a farmer in Rwot Obilo, Owoo sub county says she uprooted an acre of ground nuts after they were affected by the prolonged dry spell.

The Ministry of Water and Environment, through the Department of Meteorological Services warns that there will be reduced crop yields due to limited moisture.

It also warns of pests and diseases such as coffee wilt and flower abortion of coffee due to prolonged dry spell and increased prices for annual crops such as simsim and soya beans.
