Gulu District Faces Shortage of 3,299 School Desks

The Education Department in Gulu district says that it is facing a shortage of 3,299 desks.

While the recommended ratio is 3 pupils per desk, many schools in Gulu district struggle with sometimes 6 pupils per desk, forcing others to sit on bare floors.

Alfred Lutwa, the inspector of schools Gulu district says that a monitoring report for 2026 indicates that 45 out of the 47 primary schools in the district do not have adequate desks for learner in the ratio of 1:3 pupils.

Lutwa was last week presenting the report to a team of education officials from Tororo district who were on a learning visit

Gulu district currently has an enrolment of 30,910 pupils with a total of 7,004 desks.

Experts say proper furniture improves focus; increase attendance rates, and boosts academic performance.

Desks also improve hygiene by keeping children off dusty floors.
