Unyama Sub County in Gulu district has approved their nutrition by-law called Food security, community institution and gender responsive by-law, during their full council meeting held at their council hall in the Sub County.
Justine kidega, the LC III chairperson for Unyama sub county says the high rate of malnutrition among children and pregnant women coupled with poverty triggered the formation of the by-aw because villages.
Kidega says the by-law is there in place to ensure that everyone has a kitchen garden with major vegetables, planted cassava, beans, among others, planted fruit trees, having granaries for food storage and organic seedlings kept and not lost totally.
According to Kidega, they reviewed as a sub county and found out that most of the work at home or household chores are left for women to handle and therefore women should be able to access food stuff nearest to them like it used to be long time ago.
Kidega says the ordinance has a provision for roaming animals which be moving around frustrating peoples’ effort.
The animals will be arrested and fined 10,000 shillings per animal with a strong warning.
