Kasese catholic diocese to have parish based Martyrs day celebrations

The Bishop of the Diocese of Kasese, Rt. Rev. Aquirinus Kibira Kambale, has announced that this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, scheduled for June 3, 2026, will be held at the parish level across the diocese.

The decision follows the suspension of official national celebrations at the Namugongo Catholic Shrine due to a recent Ebola outbreak in the country.

The Diocese of Kasese, which had been designated to animate this year’s national celebrations, was compelled to revise its plans to prioritise the safety of pilgrims and the general public.

Speaking to journalists at the Bishop’s residence in Kasese Municipality, Bishop Kibira said Holy Masses will be conducted by different priests in their respective parishes to commemorate the faith and sacrifice of the Uganda Martyrs.

He urges Christians to strictly observe the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Ministry of Health, stressing that vigilance is essential in preventing the spread of Ebola.

Rev. Fr. John Baptist Kule, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, reassures the faithful that the diocese has not lost its mandate to lead the national celebrations.

He notes that, according to communication from the Uganda Episcopal Conference, Kasese Diocese will retain responsibility for organising and animating the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo in 2027.

Queen Gonda, a lay leader at Kasese Catholic Parish, encourages the public to gather at the parish level to celebrate and reflect on the sacrifices of the Uganda Martyrs.

She also urges congregants to maintain strict hand hygiene and make use of hand-washing facilities installed at all parish entrances.
