The 2026 National Skills Competitions kicked off yesterday in Kiryandongo district, drawing 20 technical and vocational institutes across the country.
This year’s competition is being hosted at Kiryandongo Technical Institute in Kiryandongo Town Council under the theme “Shaping a Skills-Driven Future”.
Speaking at the official launch of the three-day event, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Kiryangdongo District, Gloria Inasuku Natasha, encouraged youth to embrace vocational skills to fight poverty.
Inasuku notes that, unlike in the past when vocational skills training was considered for those with lower academic grades, the trend has since changed.
She notes that the significance of vocational skills is reflected in the creation of numerous presidential skilling Hubs around the country, which currently offer numerous vocational skills to youth.
There are a total of 19 zonal industrial skills hubs spread across the country, established under the presidential initiative of skilling.
David Mugenyi Semuddu, the Kiryangdongo District Finance Secretary, applauds the government for its initiative of promoting skills as it’s a pillar of National development and the economy.
Jihee Ahn, the Country Director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), says the competition is not just a showcase of skills but celebrations and progress made in Ugandan skill development.
Jihee pledges commitment to working together with the government in promoting skills development, adding that their partnership is not just support but sharing knowledge that will help promote skilled Ugandans to the international and global community.
