Kitgum Municipal Council has repaired nine faulty street solar lights out of the 52 that are currently not working in the Municipality.
Richard Okwera Ojara, the Mayor of Kitgum Municipality says the 52 faulty street solar lights are part of the 150 lights that were installed in 2016 by China Chongqing International Construction Corporation (CICO) as part of the construction of the Shs 195 billion Acholi Bur-Musingo (87.4km) road project.
He explains that the CICO-installed lights have expired after serving beyond their seven-year lifespan.
According to Ojara, Kitgum Municipality currently has a total of 552 street solar lights.
Out of these, 402 were installed under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development – USMID road project, while 150 were installed under the Acholi Bur to Musingo road construction.
Ojara says the 402 lights installed under the USMID project have a functionality rate of 99%, with only one to three having slight problems.
He notes that the municipality has a systematic program of replacing almost ten solar lights per financial year, and in the last financial year, nine were replaced.
The municipality plans to work on another 10 lights using locally raised revenue in this financial year.
