Principal Judge Abodo Urges Out-of-Court Settlement of Land Disputes in Acholi

Lady Justice Frances Abodo, the Principal Judge, has called on communities in the Acholi to embrace out-of-court mechanisms in resolving land disputes.

She argues that such approaches are faster, culturally grounded, and more accessible.

She says the majority of cases in the region are land-related, many involving boundary disagreements that could be more effectively handled within communities.

Justice Abodo emphasizes the need to strengthen Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms, which the Judiciary is already promoting saying not all land conflicts require formal court litigation.

However, Justice Abodo clarifies that not all disputes can be resolved outside the formal justice system, particularly complex cases that require legal interpretation.

Her remarks follow numerous concerns raised by residents during the court open day last week, many of whom cited delays, high costs, and procedural complexities in court processes.

Justice Odoki further assures the public that safeguards have been put in place to ensure fairness within the community-based system.
