The Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Walter Oyo Komakech, has emphasised the importance of civil servants preparing for life after retirement.
Speaking at a farewell ceremony for Joseph Monday Bagonza, the former Kitgum Municipal Town Clerk, Oyo noted that many civil servants face significant challenges after retirement due to a lack of planning.
Oyo highlightes that retirement should not be viewed as an end to one’s productive life, but rather as a transition to a new phase.
He advises civil servants to prepare physically, emotionally, psychologically, and socially for this transition, citing the example of many retirees who struggle financially and socially after leaving service.
He also stresses the importance of maintaining social connections and community involvement, noting that many retirees isolate themselves and face difficulties adjusting to life outside of government service.
Richard Okwera Ojara, the Kitgum Municipal Mayor, praises Bagonza as one of the most committed civil servants Kitgum Municipal Council has ever had.
Ojara notes that Bagonza joined the council during a period of friction between councillors and civil servants, but he quickly restored harmony and worked tirelessly to promote development in the municipality.
He says that since he joined politics in 2006, as Kitgum Town Council Chairperson, to date, he has worked with over 15 town clerks, and Bagonza is exceptional among them.
Bagonza, who served in the Local Government for 32 years, joined Kitgum Municipal Council in early 2025 and worked for 13 months before retiring on March 27th, 2026.
He is replaced by Mr Akuma Mazamil Vunnimva, transferred from Nebbi Municipality.
