Shock in Lira as Classroom Collapse Leaves Pupils Injured, Director Arrested

The Director of Alasa Islamic School in Ireda West East Division in Lira City Mr. Bua Aus Ogwang, has been arrested after two pupils sustained injuries following a classroom collapsed on them.

The incident happened yesterday at around 12:50pm while Primary Five science lesson was ongoing. 

Information indicates that the class teacher Ocen Adam heard a sudden loud noise caused by falling concrete blocks which struck the roof and broke through the ceiling board.

Ocen immediately alerted pupils to evacuate the classroom however during the evacuation, more rabbles continued to fall resulting in injuries to several pupils.

However, two pupils, 11-year-old Mohamad Hamad, and 10-year-old Muntairs Omara sustained serious injuries on the head, nose and left hand respectively.

Six other pupils identified as 10-year-old Oskim Yogeza, 11-year-old Hazil Aspan, 10-year-old Amagat Satra, 10-year-old Fatuma Ahmed, 13-year-old Habiba Bua and Safia Ahmed sustained minor injuries and complained of pain.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Police Spokesperson for North Kyoga Region confirms this report and said after inspection, it was observed that the affected Primary Five classroom was poorly constructed, with weak structural support and substandard ceiling installation that did not meet acceptable engineering standards.

Okema says, the recommendation given to the school authority was to temporarily close to safeguard lives and allow it for reconstruction in accordance with approved engineering standards under strict supervision of the City Engineer, to prevent recurrence of similar incidents.
