Bardege Health Centre III Screens 114 People for PrEP

Officials say Bardege Health Centre III has screened 114 people for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) between January and March this year.

The update was shared during a meeting organized by the Health Journalism Network Uganda with members of the Northern Uganda Media Club.

Dr. Ayaa Mary Stella, the in-charge of Bardege Health Centre III says of the 114 people screened, 52 were enrolled on PrEP, 38 were pregnant women, five were breast feeding mothers and nine were other categories.

Ayaa urges young people and other key populations to seek PrEP services at the facility in order to reduce the risk of HIV infection.

Florence Amito, the Gulu City HIV Focal Person urges local leaders to engage in community dialogue and sensitization in order to increase the uptake of PrEP.

She notes that funding cuts from USAID has affected outreach.

Grace Acan, a resident of Kasubi Small Gate faults some medical staff over asking for money for PrEP services which is supposed to be free.

Gulu City currently has 22,439 people living with HIV.

Of these, 14,882 are females while 7,637 are males underscoring the need for prevention services like PrEP.
